디올과 함께한 이번 커버 화보에는 해린의 다면적인 얼굴이 담겼어요. 그중 고양이로 변장한 모습도 있네요. 해린에게 고양이는 늘 짝꿍처럼 붙어 다니는 비유지요?
제 헤어스타일이나 메이크업에 따라 버‘ 니즈’ 분들이 온갖 종의 고양이 이름을 붙여주는데··· 이번에는 좀 ‘흑화한 고양이’ 같았어요. 이렇게 차가운 느낌의 고양이로 변신한 건 처음일 거예요. 매 컷 촬영할 때마다 의상뿐 아니라 주얼리, 배경이 달라지니 하나하나가 다 새로운 느낌이었어요. 저도 즐거운 느낌과 다소 차분히 가라앉은 느낌 등 다채로운 분위기를 즐긴 것 같아요.

해린은 2006년생이죠. 우선, 지금 해린이 생각하는 해린은 어떤 사람인가요?
자신에게 계속 질문하는 사람? 채우고 싶은 부분이 많기 때문에 스스로 질문하고 생각하고 그러길 자주 해요.

뭘 하고 어떤 시간을 보낼 때 큰 행복감을 느끼는데요?
일찍 일정을 마친 후 숙소에서 태블릿 PC로 영상을 보며 저녁 식사를 할 때 정말 행복해요(웃음). 아니면 커피가 있는 여유로운 아침 식사를 할 때! 물론 이런 행복은 그다음 날 스케줄이 없을 때 누릴 수 있는 것 같아요.

자기가 어떤 경우에 좀 쑥스러움을 느끼는지 알고 있어요?
저는 칭찬에 약한 것 같습니다(웃음).

싫어하는 게 있다면요?
인정하지 않는 태도요! 무엇이 어떻든, 또 시간이 걸리더라도 인정할 것은 인정하려는 태도가 없다면 발전할 기회를 스스로 놓치는 거라고 생각해요.

해린의 관심사나 취미 생활에 대해 찾아보다가, 에센셜 오일을 종종 사용한다는 사실을 알았어요. 반갑습니다. 제가 최근 에센셜 오일에 심하게 꽂혀서 수십 가지를 사들였거든요. 보편적인 라벤더나 시트러스 계열 외에도 제라늄, 사이프러스, 네롤리, 팔마로사, 카모마일 로만, 카모마일 저먼 등등.
오! 에센셜 오일에 진심이시구나! 저는 머리를 정화해주는 시원한 느낌을 좋아해요. 향을 맡고 나면 마음까지 정말 리프레시되는 것 같아서 자주 사용하죠. 특별히 사용하는 에센셜 오일의 종류가 따로 있다기보다 그런 시원한 향이면 다 좋아요. 평소에는 몸에 자주 쓰는데, 가끔은 침구에 뿌리고 자요!

최근에 또 좀 꽂혔거나 끌리는 것이 생겼나요?
여행 유튜브요. 많은 사람들이 여행 유튜브를 즐기는 이유와 비슷하겠지만, 다양한 세계의 사람들 속에 들어가보는 재미가 있어요. 그 재미에 끌려서 요즘 계속 봐요. 그런데 보다 보니, 여행하는 유튜버들의 힘든 점도 확실히 있겠다 싶은 생각이 들어요.

지난번에 <더블유>와 유튜브 촬영을 했을 때는 세계사나 한국사에 관한 영상을 재밌게 본다고 언급했죠. 저는 뉴진스의 유튜브 채널을 즐겁게 보고 있어요. 가족과 도쿄 여행을 하면서 해린이 직접 찍은 브이로그도 있더라고요. 그런데 여행 시작한 첫날 서점에 간다고 하고서 정신없었는지 영상 촬영을 못했잖아요. 혹시 쓰타야 서점에 갔을까요?
네! 가본 적 있는 서점이라 기대하고 다시 찾아갔는데 물건들이 예전과는 좀 달라져 있더라고요. 예전에 갔을 때는 가족에게도 보여주고 싶은 것들이 제법 많았는데. 이번엔 아쉬웠어요, 흑.

2023년 활동을 돌아보는 유튜브 콘텐츠에서 멤버들이 ‘Cool With You’ 뮤직비디오를 보고 울음 나왔던 에피소드를 나눌 때는, 해린이 ‘나는 ‘Ditto’ 때 울었는데’라고 했죠.
뮤직비디오가 완성된 걸 처음 봤을 때, 그 속에 나오는 우리를 마치 3인칭 시점인 듯 바라보게 됐어요. 교복 입은 멤버들을 보니 정말 그 시절에 우리가 같이 존재했던 것처럼, 그 시절의 추억을 남긴 것처럼 느껴지더라고요. 그러면서 감정이 훅 올라왔나 봐요.

해린은 자기 이야길 하기보다 남의 이야기 듣기를 더 좋아하는 사람 같다고 느꼈거든요. 해린이 보통 때보다 말수가 좀 많아질 때는 어떤 경우예요?
어떤 주제를 가지고 이야기할 때가 아닐까 해요. 또는 의견을 말해야 하는 상황에서는 제 생각을 표현하는 편이에요.

언젠가 멤버들 MBTI를 분석할 때, 해린에 대해선 ‘생각은 깊고 많지만, 굳이 겉으로는 표현하지 않을 듯’이라는 심리 분석가의 해석이 덧붙었어요. 동의해요?(웃음)
제가 여러 생각을 드러내기엔 아직 확실하지 않은 생각도 있고, 또 꺼내놓기엔 좀 이른 생각도 있기 때문에 좀 더 정리된 후에 표현하려고 해요. 이미 알고 계시는 분도 있겠지만, 저는 질문 하나하나에도 생각을 거치고 난 다음 답할 때가 많아요. 그래도 연습생 생활을 거쳐 지금까지 오면서, 무언가 정말 표현하고 싶은 게 생기면 ‘이 점은 꼭 표현해야겠다!’라는 적극적인 태도가 저에게 있다는 걸 느꼈어요.

일기를 쓰기도 하나요? 해린은 일기나 메모장에 주로 어떤 내용을 적어둘까요?
다이어리 같은 경우는 종종 에피소드가 있을 때 쓰는 편인데, 그날을 기록하기 위해 써요. 그래서 그때의 상황, 내 생각을 자세하게 쓰죠. 책이나 노래 가사에서 마음에 드는 부분은 메모장에 적어둬요. 제가 마음으로는 더 활기차게 보내고 싶지만 그렇게 잘 안 되는 시기가 있었어요. 그때 이런 말을 적어둔 것 같네요. ‘자기의 능력을 최대한으로 발휘한 후에 느끼는 성취감이나 만족감, 그리고 그에 따른 성장이나 깨달음 등이 어우러져 인생의 행복을 이룬다.’

최근 ‘Billboard Women In Music’에서 뉴진스가 ‘올해의 그룹’상을 수상한다는 소식이 알려졌어요. 한 해 음악 산업에 큰 영향을 끼친 여성 아티스트와 프로듀서 등을 선정하는 큰 시상식이죠. 뉴진스는 빌보드 메인 싱글 차트인 ‘핫 100’ 에 무려 다섯 곡이 진입했고, 두 번째 미니앨범 이 빌보드 메인 앨범 차트인 ‘빌보드 200’에서 1위에 오르기도 했어요. 지난여름엔 롤라팔루자라는 큰 페스티벌 무대에도 섰고요. 그렇게 화려한 무대 위에서 내려와 차분한 강해린으로 돌아오기까지, 어떤 기분과 느낌을 거치는지 궁금해요.
무대를 마치고 시간이 좀 지나면 자연스럽게 다시 원래의 저로 돌아오는 것 같아요. 조금 전에 벌어진 일인데 뭔가 긴 시간을 보낸 후 끝내고 온 듯한 느낌이 들기도 하면서. 무대에 서기까지 겪은 모든 준비 과정과 바로 그 공연 시간까지 무대에서 함께 털어버린 기분이에요. 분명한 건, 가수의 꿈을 키우기 시작한 후 제가 인정받은 순간으로 기억하는 첫 경험이 데뷔 후에 생겼다는 점이에요. 버니즈들이 뉴진스의 노래를 듣고 ‘이런 감정을 느꼈다’, ‘힘이 되었다’ 같은 말을 해주었을 때가 그랬죠. ‘우리 음악이 이런 영향을 주고 있구나’를 처음 알게 되면서 그 상황에 감사했어요.

웬만한 음악이 한 차트에 오르고 내려가는 속도가 빠르게 돌아가는 시대예요. 금세 순위권에 올랐다가 금세 사라지곤 하죠. 그런데 뉴진스의 곡은 시간이 꽤 흘러도 여전히 많은 사람이 듣는다는 점에서 상당히 유니크한 현상입니다. 우리는 매끄러운 결과물만을 접하지만, 녹음 과정에서 특히 어렵거나 신경 써야 했던 곡은 뭐예요?
녹음하기 전에 연습하면서 혼자 이런저런 시도도 해보고, 여러 느낌으로 노래해본 후 녹음실 안에서는 피드백을 받으면서 제가 연습한 느낌과 섞어 부르는 편이거든요. ‘Attention’과 ‘Hype Boy’ 녹음 때 유독 어려웠던 기억이 나요. 그 곡들의 리듬을 살리면서 디테일까지 함께 고려해야 했다는 점에서요.

한 그룹이 오래 지속되기 위해 필요하고 중요한 것 한 가지를 꼽자면 뭘까요?
소통과 대화가 가장 중요한 것 같아요.

해린의 20대는 어떤 모습이길 원하고 바라나요?
아직은 확 떠오르진 않지만, 필요한 순간에는 즐길 수 있는 사람이 되고 싶어요.

<W Korea> The cover shoots with Dior captured different sides of your face. In one of them, you dressed like a cat. You are often called a cat for your cat-like looks.
Haerin Bunnies call me with different breeds of cat depending on my hairstyle or makeup. This time, I was more like a “dark” cat. I think it’s my first time becoming such a cool-looking cat. The clothes, jewelry, and backgrounds changed every shot, and every scene felt entirely new. I enjoyed experiencing various moods, such as a cheerful mood and a calm mood.

You were born in 2006. First, let me ask you how would you describe yourself now?
I would say that I am a person who keeps asking myself questions. Because there are many parts of me that I want to fill in, I often ask and think about myself.

What do you do, and how do you spend your time to feel happy?
I feel really happy when I finish my schedule early and have dinner while watching videos on my tablet in our dorm (laughs). I also feel happy when I have a relaxing breakfast with coffee! Of course, I can enjoy them only when I don’t have schedules on the next day.

Do you know what makes you feel a little shy?
I often get shy when someone compliments me (laughs).

What is something that you hate?
I hate when someone doesn’t admit! You miss the opportunity to improve yourself if you don’t admit something you have to admit whatever and however long it may take.

I searched your interests and hobbies, and I found that you often use essential oils. I was glad to hear that because I personally fell in love with essential oils lately and bought dozens of them. For example, I got common lavender and citrus oils as well as geranium, cypress, neroli, palmarosa, Roman chamomile, and German chamomile.
Oh, you are really into essential oils! I love essential oils that freshen my head. I often use essential oils because smelling them really refreshes my mind. I don’t have a specific type of essential oil that I particularly use. I just use any kind of refreshing scents. I usually spray essential oils on my body, but I sometimes spray them on my bedding, too!

What are some things that interest you recently?
I am recently into travel YouTube channels. I am sure I enjoy these channels for the similar reasons why many people watch them, but I do enjoy exploring people from different countries. That is why I keep watching travel channels these days. However, I also realized that being a travel YouTuber is not as easy as it may seem.

When you were on YouTube with <W> magazine, you mentioned that you enjoy watching videos about world history and Korean history. I personally enjoy YouTube channel of New Jeans. I watched the vlog you filmed as you traveled Tokyo with your family. On the first day of travel, you said you were going to a library, but you were too busy to film there. Did you go to Tsutaya Bookstore?
Yes! I’ve been there before, and I was really excited to revisit the library. There were so many things I wanted to show my family, but they did not exist anymore when I revisited the library. So, I was a bit disappointed.

On your YouTube channel, New Jeans members reviewed 2023 activities and talked about an episode of crying after watching “Cool With You” music video. Then, you said “Ditto” made you cry.
When I first watched the final version of the music video, it felt like watching us from a third-person point of view. As I watched our members in uniforms, it felt as if we existed and made memories together of those times. Then, I couldn’t hold back tears.

I think you prefer listening to others rather than sharing your own story. Is there any time when you speak more than usual?
I speak more when I discuss a certain topic. I also express my thoughts in situations where I need to share them.

When you took the MBTI test with your members, a psychological analyst commented that you are a person who has deep thoughts but chooses not to express them. Do you agree?
When my thoughts are too unclear or too early to share with others, I tend to express them after I organize them in my head. As some of you may already know, I often take time to think before answering a question. Still, as I went through the trainee period and came up to this point, I realized that I do have a passion to express something I really want to share with others.

Do you keep a diary? What do you usually write in your diary or memo notes?
I often write a diary when I have special episodes, and I keep a diary to record the day. So, I record the situation and my thoughts in my diary. I also take notes on favorite parts of the books and song lyrics. There were times when I tried to stay more cheerful, but I could not. Around that time, I wrote down, “happiness of life comes from the harmony of sense of achievement, satisfaction, growth, and realization after exerting one’s ability to the fullest.”

Recently, Billboard Women In Music announced that New Jeans won Group of the Year. Billboard Women In Music is a big music award event that awards female artists and female producers for their contributions to the music industry. New Jeans scored five entries on the Billboard Hot 100. The second mini album, <Get UP>, also scored a No.1 debut on the Billboard 200. Last summer, New Jeans was also invited to Lollapalooza, too. Could you share the feelings and emotions you went through as you came down from those stages as Haerin and returned to a calm girl as Haerin Kang?
I return to myself as I spend some time after finishing the stages. The last stage was not that long ago, but it feels as if I came back after a long time. All the practices I went through for the stage and times I spent on the stage seem to disappear after the stages. Still, it is clear I had an experience of getting recognized for the first time since I debuted after pursuing the dream of becoming a singer. I felt that when Bunnies told me about the emotions they felt and strength they gained after listening to our songs. It was the first time I realized that our songs are actually influencing people.

These days, new songs appear and disappear in charts so quickly. Even the songs in the top charts disappear soon. However, the songs by New Jeans are unique in a way that they are loved by so many people even after a considerable amount of time. As listeners, we always listen to the final songs but is there any song that you found particularly challenging or had to pay extra attention?
Before recording, I make various attempts on my own and sing the song in different ways. Then, I sing the song at the recording studio, get feedback, and find the best way to sing the song. Recording “Attention” and “Hype Boy” was particularly challenging for me because I had to follow the rhythms while considering the details.

Could you pick one element that is necessary and important for a group to last longer?
Communication and conversation are the most important elements.

How do you want to look in your 20s?
I don’t have clear thoughts yet, but I want to become a person who can enjoy the necessary moments.
